It is normal and natural to want to be free to decide and act according to what is appropriate to us as unique individuals. Not even the wisest and best traditions can prescribe what unique individuals should do in unique situations; much less can collusions and taboos that do violence to human and community integrity. How is a unique individual to confirm freedom to decide and act---in spite of collusions, taboos, and traditions of questionable integrity? If one always does what one is told to do is one free to decide to do otherwise? There is no evidence of one's freedom unless one does other than one is told to do. How is one to decide when to do other than one is told to do? Much of what one is told to do by collusions, taboos and traditions is actually prudent and sensible; it is the coercion which is resented. Yet all too often to know that one is free one feels compelled to do other than what one is told to do, just on principle, to prove that one is free. This may entail doing things which are clearly not prudent; but such is the price of freedom, to learn from one's mistakes. When collusions, taboos and coercive traditions are operative it is hard to learn from one's mistakes. One may fear that the undesirable consequences of one's decisions and actions have been the result of people who are in collusion to maintain the collusions, taboos and coercive traditions. We may suspect that the consequences are contrived consequences which lack integrity, rather than natural consequences which inevitably follow from the reliability of natural laws. We may feel the necessity to test again and again by seeking evidence that the consequences are contrived. In such testing we may suffer greatly the consequences of both natural laws and the consequences of violating the laws of disintegrative collusions, taboos and traditions. It is exceedingly difficult to tell the difference between natural and contrived laws. In a coherent community characterized by personal and communal integrity it is not necessary to tell the difference, for people of integrity do not contrive consequences. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
