When a situation calls for the cooperation of two warring factions---the response to the situation is bound to be embarrassing. Neither side alone can respond successfully, in spite of each side's claims of sufficiency to all situations. Each side's pattern of criticism of the in-adequacies of the other side --- undermines the possibility of cooperation when it is needed. The affective lessons which are/are-not learned in infancy/childhood enable or haunt the adult. Rationalization and intellectualization are powerless to fully correct the inadequacies of an infant's or child's affective experiences. If we do not learn to be comfortable and secure with the procedures of conflict resolution and intimacy when we are infants and children- --it is much more difficult to do so when we are adults. Our responses to conflict and opportunities for intimacy flow more from our infancy and childhood --- then from our rational processes. The way we respond to emotionally laden situations flows strongly from the emotionally laden role models whom we observed in our impressionable years as infants and children. If our role models responded with embarrassment---we are likely to respond with embarrassment; perhaps not with the same embarrassment, but with embarrassment nevertheless. It takes more than intellectual effort to develop a coherent pattern of affective response to situations which were embarrassing to our role models. Successful creation of new mature patterns of affective response takes great effort, great both in qualitative and quantitative terms. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
