How scientists will behave depends upon which theories they choose to take most seriously; to regard as most important. Scientists' choices of research projects are determined by their choices of which theories to regard as most valuable. How scientists regard the data which they gather in their research work---is determined in large part by their choices of theories. The theories which scientists regard as important thus often determine what research they regard as important. Scientists' priorities are directed in large part by their choice of theory. The choice to approach objects and people objectively is a choice, a decision; it is a choice which is not made objectively. The choice is an expression of the self, it is self-referential. The choice is a statement about the self, in action, if not in words. The choice is not an observation or an analysis regarding objects. The choice is a declaration of how the self regards the self, and how the self should spend the limited time available. The choice to try to be objective in approaching objects and people---is not itself an objective choice. The work of a theoretical scientist is not objective work. It is artistic work, an expression of the disposition of the scientist, and subject to constraints as is the work of any artist. Artistic work is expressive of the self; it is not objective. Artistic work is self-referential. The work of a theoretical scientist is artistic and self-referential; it is not objective. Perceptions flow from theory. What we see depends upon what we choose to look for, and what we are willing to perceive. We can not perceive much that is present to be seen---because to perceive it would be to destroy those perceptions which we have chosen to regard as ultimately important. We can not comfortably perceive the destruction of our god. The choice of which god to serve as God is not an objective act, it is an act of faith and trust. Objectivity is a myth which scientists use to give meaning to their search for certainty in an insecure world. Objective is not the means to security. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
