In this way they help banish the loneliness which often drives people to foolish extreme limits of competitive behavior. Such competitive behavior often undermines the integrity of individuals and communities, and so intensifies the loneliness which motivates the behavior. It is a vicious feed-back loop! Positive re-enforcement is more constructive than is negative. Rewards are move effective than punishments. We can best overcome our loneliness by encouraging those people who help build up the integrity of individuals and their communities, for only in that way can communal loneliness be overcome. Those activities which are most worth-while are valuable because they help people overcome loneliness---by bringing people together in cooperative activities. Competitive team-sports are a paradox---in that they bring people together in competitive efforts to achieve extreme limits of human performance. When driven to the competitive limit of logic---such team sports are divisive and undermine the integrity of individuals and communities. Yet, competitive activities can be used as a means for promoting cooperative team efforts. Thus, for sports events to ultimately make sense---sportsmanship should be more highly rewarded than winning. Competition is driven by the attention of the spectators---whether it is in sports, the performing arts, popular music, business, or Good Housekeeping. If the spectators regard winning as everything---they thereby contribute to driving competition to dis- integrative extreme limits---which promote loneliness and competition or scarce human recognition. Lonely people do not helpfully recognize each other and that is why they are lonely. Overly competitive people recognize only the very few who are the very best, and that is why they are lonely. Worth-while human achievements are promoted by appropriate recognition for those who contribute to them in cooperative ways which help banish loneliness. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
