Graduate schools are dominated by researchers preoccupied with instrumental values which are essential to completion of the research which is required for the Ph.D degrees. The teaching of those instrumental values as worthy of ultimate concern is the central reality of graduate school programs. The training rituals of graduate programs are means by which professors profess their belief and faith in their technocratic values. Technocrats focus upon techniques without regard for what the use of those techniques does to personal and communal integrity. Their excuse for their failure to call attention to human consequences is that they believe that they should not affirm one set of values as better than another set of values. By failing to call attention to the human consequences of inappropriate affirmations of instrumental values --- they affirm instrumental values to be worthy of ultimate concern in spite of the fact that such ultimate concern for instrumental values undermines personal and communal integrity, and so undermines the possibility of meaningful human survival. If scientists are to avoid teaching their students that scientists' instrumental values are the highest possible values --- the scientists must teach their students how to evaluate instrumental values in terms of integrative values which are essential to personal and communal integrity. The teaching of science can not be a value-neutral activity --- because it is an activity by which scientists affirm how they believe students should spend the most creative years of their finite lives. For scientists to minimize the bias which they pass on to their students they must help their students evaluate scientific techniques in terms of integrative values upon which diverse people can agree.
