Jack has been a member of a growing community in
which communal understanding does not depend upon explicit
symbolic communications such as speaking, writing, and
other sign languages. It is as if each member of the
community just knows the feelings and thoughts of other
members of the community, and all thoughts and feelings
are communally known. The community as a whole thinks and
feels as one organism and each member of the community
embodies a complete image of the whole community, just as
any piece of a hologram embodies a complete image of the
whole scene seen from one particular perspective. Each
member of Jack's community embodies an image of the whole
community from a perspective appropriate to that
individual, and all members participate in all other
images to make the whole community.
Jack has learned about and come to value
individuality and individual rights and creativity. Jack
is finding it impossible to fulfill the values of being an
independent creative individual who is able to compete
successfully, while remaining as a participating member of
his growing community. Other community members are aware
of his alienative thoughts about the constraints which the
communal growing place upon his creative imagination.
Jack's best friends are afraid of his strange thoughts and
feelings, even though Jack thinks and feels that he is
keeping his thoughts and feelings to himself. Others are
disturbed at his efforts to withdraw into a private non-
growing life, and wonder why he is leaving the communal
life.
Jack has left the jungle to go live in a big city as
a lonely individual who does not participate any longer in
a growing communal life. Jack is becoming a successful
competitive individual who is making many creative
contributions to the modern world of high technology. He
has made many highly valued contributions to his new
nation's national security system, which protects his new
nation against the threat it perceives in other nations of
which they know very little. Jack has forgotten what it
was like to be a member of a growing community, but he is
haunted by the memories which are no longer his.
