If touching a very hot object brought no pain while yet burning flesh, then the mistake of touching a hot object would not be quickly recognized. A religious cult would not survive long if it did not recognize the mistake of using spoiled green beans as a sacred food for communion ceremonies. Any factor which makes it difficult to recognize mistakes is a factor likely to reduce the chances of survival. It is difficult to separate the process of recognizing a mistake from the process of sharing that recognition with those people closest to you who will be at risk if the mistake is not recognized by them. If your closest associates are of a mind-set that they will refuse to recognize the mistake when it is called to their attention, then it will be difficult for you to let yourself become aware of a mistake which they will refuse to let you help them become aware of. In anticipation you may move to reduce tension by avoiding a perception which will heighten conflict between you and those closest to you. You may choose the risk of repetition of the mistake over the certainty of personal rejection by those persons closest to you. Collusions work to inhibit the honest sharing and so inhibit the recognition of mistakes which put colluders at great risk. It is a grave mistake to inhibit the development and honest sharing of new perceptions. Only when perceptions are developed, shared, and openly examined is it possible to perceive whether or not the perceptions are helpful or not. Perceptions which are repressed generate hidden conflicts. Perceptions which are openly shared generate open informing debate. No person should ever be rejected for honestly sharing an unconventional perception. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
