Without the ability to learn from other persons' own experiences and insights, humans would not be able to cope effectively in new situations. To learn form others at least the following conditions need to be met: (1) Persons must be willing to share what they have learned, (2) Other persons must be willing to listen to and learn from what has been experienced by individuals who are significantly different, (3) Those who are willing to share and willing to listen must have the good fortune of living in a community dedicated to both personal and communal integrity, rather than to narrow-minded conformity to traditional patterns of behavior and thought. The three conditions are intimately inter-related. The meeting of any one of the conditions contributes to the other conditions being met. The undermining of any of the three conditions also tends to undermine the others. When people undermine the freedom of others to communicate their experiences and perceptions, they undermine the integrity of individuals and of the community. Integrity is not possible without communication which is free, open, and without fear of reprisal. The essence of integrity is the free flow of information among constituent parts. When a person or community lacks integrity there are parts which are not in communication, and so act independently of each other; without unity. Unity through communication is essential to, if not the essence of, integrity. People who lack integrity are often dedicated to narrow-minded conformity to traditional patterns of behavior and thought---for themselves and for others. They are dedicated to getting others to conform to their own conceptions of what is right, proper, good, etc. To succeed such people must use coercion to get people who differ from each other to behave as if they were not different from each other. Under such circumstances openness, honesty, integrity, and learning from people who are different cease. People make mistakes and cannot share what they learn from their mistakes; learning is stopped. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
