In a culture which idolizes objectivity such people are not perceived as perceiving reality in any meaningful way; they are perceived as viewing reality in a biased personal way which means that their perceptions are to be regarded as meaningless. Meaning is not associated with personal perception, but with treating elements, parts, of reality in exclusively objective ways. Such treatment reduces persons to the status of objects, and deprives them of any meaning which transcends that of inanimate objects. An ultimate cultural commitment to objectivity leads people to treat each other as meaningless objects. To always be objective means that one must not show or feel emotion, even in intimate personal relationships. People who commit themselves to objectivity as a value which transcends all other values, cannot with integrity participate in meaningful inter-personal dialogue which includes emotional openness and honesty. To be consistent they must inhibit their awareness of their own and of others feelings, desires, fears, etc. Consistency is supportive of objectivity and to be fully in the service of objectivity as the ultimate value, they must be consistent. Counting, measurement, quantification, and computation serve objectivity well. It is much easier to obtain communal agreement regarding such quantitative descriptions of reality than it is to obtain communal agreement regarding non-quantitative descriptions. People who are ultimately dedicated to objectification of reality thus make much use of counting, measurements, and computations. Perceptions which cannot be so described are regarded as meaningless. The worship of objectivity as a god in these ways promotes alienation, frustration, and ultimately violent expressions of such alienation and frustration. People who are totally objective are not free to find personal meaning in life, and so tend not to respect life. They tend towards violence and the technologies of objective violence, as well as towards psychological violence. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
