You cannot be sure which aspect of a split personality will dominate in any given situation, and often an inappropriate aspect dominates in a violent way which tends to undermine the integrity of whatever may be in the way. The people of Germany respected and trusted Hitler in democratic elections, and Hitler led them in violent ways which did not respect the integrity of creative Jews, including the physicists who were engaged in the discovery of ways of regarding and manipulating objects in order to violently release great amounts of energy. Hitler's lack of integrity aggravated the physicists' tendency towards depersonalization, and motivated them to react towards Hitler and his followers in ways which lacked personal integrity. The leaders of the American people respected and trusted the very bright physicists who offered a Faustian bargain by which to acquire the personally destructive power of the atom bomb to use against the Nazi homeland of the physicists. In turn thousands of bright young scientists trusted their teachers and the national leaders who offered them the chance to work in great secrecy away from their families on what was regarded as a task of great importance, even if doing so violated their own personal/family integrity. The American scientists did not trust the integrity of the scientists who remained in Germany. Thus, out of fear of other scientists, the American scientists pushed ahead to create the first atomic bomb. having lost their own integrity, they became so preoccupied with their obsession that they kept right on working when the Nazi army was defeated, and their invention was used to violate the integrity of thousands of Japanese who started a war in an effort to defend the honor and integrity of their nation which Americans had not respected or treated with personal integrity in the years before the war. We are now continuing the arms race which was started in this way. It is dangerous to trust and respect people who lack integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
