They have not recognized that "science" is value neutral by virtue of "science" being an abstraction which is not personal. Values pertain to patterns according to which persons make choices and arrive at decisions. Values do not pertain to abstractions, but to persons. Thus scientists are not value neutral even though "science" as an abstraction may be value neutral. Scientists are persons, not abstractions. In their effort to live up to their ideal of being value neutral in keeping with "science" being value neutral scientists have repressed awareness of the patterns according to which they make decisions and arrive at choices. They are not free to articulate the values in terms of which they set priorities. They pretend that they are not setting priorities, but merely arriving at logical conclusions which are forced upon they willy nilly by the empirical evidence which is objectively gathered without respect for biasing subjective considerations. They are unable to see the differences between their choices and conclusions; pretending that some of their choices are conclusions and vice versa; but usually regarding all as logical conclusions. So long as scientists are not free to articulate their values for public consideration and criticism, they will not be able to systematically and honestly set professional priorities. They will not be able to be aware of the values in terms of which they are in fact setting priorities, and so will not be able to openly discuss their values and the implications of their values. They as teachers will not be able to share their values openly and honestly with their students; and instead will have to continue to transmit their values covertly in ways which make the students thoughtless victims of scientists' values in contexts where the values are inappropriate. Scientists' professional values are often inappropriate in the context of the inter-personal relationships which are central to educational activities. Science teachers in particular need to articulate their values openly to their students to liberally educate their students so that they can transcend scientists' provincial values.
