Predictions are vulnerable to collusive biases---to an extent related to how reflexive the predictions are. The act of formulating a prediction may be biased; the act of interpreting a previously made prediction in the light of subsequent events may be biased; and human choices affecting the course of events and the process of verification of the prediction may all be biased. Collusive biases may operate through fear, wishes, self images, traditions, beliefs, language limitations, economics, political power, investments, role model inertia, reward systems, punitive systems, etc. It is impossible to be genuinely objective about processes which may significantly affect the accuracy of one's perception of one's welfare, security, ground of hope, source of meaning, ground of being, or traditional behavior patterns. Distance from that which one is considering is possible only to the extent that one's personal welfare, security, meaning, etc. are perceived as relatively independent of the particular turn of future events in the process which one is considering. One cannot be objective about war, revolution, population explosions, epidemics, resource crises, economic crises, elections, intellectual analyses, religious testimonies, personal relationships, role models, etc. that one perceives as seriously threatening one's own self. Thus, what one can be objective about depends profoundly upon one's source of security and hope, upon one's ground of being and doing. Collusions generate unstable situations which are vulnerable to failure when environmental changes undermine the apparent stability created by the collusion. Maturity pertains to the ability to maintain a healthy internal dynamic equilibrium---when one is in a threatening and/or changing environment. Mature creatures survive by means of internal processes which achieve an internal equilibrium which is advantageous in the dynamic environment. Immature creatures perish because they become the victims of their changing environment, reacting to it in a inflexible way, rather than responding in a way flexible which promotes survival. Collusions inhibit the development of maturity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
