Which of them is right? Suppose that after touching and smelling the fruit each continued with their own different perception and conviction about the reality? Suppose further that each gathered around friends who shared their perception and conviction? If two extended groups of sincere people perceive mutually inconsistent objective realities, how are we to know which group is perceiving the really real objective reality? Such disagreement is not likely to occur as regards familiar objects such as apples and oranges, but such disagreements regularly occur as regards relationships between people which are often regarded as being equally objective. Often not only are people reduced to the status of being objects, but also the intimate relationships between people are regarded objectively and so regarded as if they were objective realities. In such situations the non-objective desires, fears, hopes, and wishes of observers play a central role in how participant observers perceive the human relationships. The different perceptions depend as much upon the differences between observers, as upon differences between objective realities. Different groups of observers with great sincerity and conviction may "in concert" agree upon inconsistent objective realities being present, and find it impossible to take the other groups' perceptions seriously. They may all insist on continuing to believe that their own is the only legitimate perception of it. Because of their non-objective desires, fears, hopes, and wishes they are unwilling to entertain the possibility that what they have regarded as an objective reality is in large part occasioned by their non-objective desires, fears, hopes, and wishes. Because of their immaturity they seek security in the notion of a unique objective reality in all situations---and become trapped in a collusive prison of their own construction. They are imprisoned in a reality of their own making which they cannot see. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
