Humans need community. People differ. People with common characteristics find community which they need by focusing upon the development of a common world-view. The need for community is the motivating force. The common world-view is a means of achieving community. The achievement of a common world- view is an adjunct to the achievement of community. The process of the development of a common world-view cannot be fully understood without recognition of the universal need of humans for community, integrity of personal relationship webs. The process of sharing perceptual frameworks is central to the formation of community and a means to the formation of community. That which undermines the process of sharing undermines the process of formation of community. The central process is just as much that of sharing as that of the development of a coherent world-view. Usually the focus is upon the structure of the world-view, not upon the process of sharing. It is usually assumed that motivation is generated in the interest in the world-view, rather than generated by the desire to be a participant in the process of sharing, a participant in human community. Education is often perceived as a means of transmitting correct world-views. Such a view places an emphasis upon the content of that which is shared and its practical importance, not upon the importance of the community which is created and celebrated in the process of sharing. Rarely is the educational community perceived as the legitimate goal of the activity; the transmission of knowledge and skills is the justification of the community in the common view. Community must be justified in terms of its fruits, rather than community being viewed as the goal which is achieved through the process of transmitting knowledge and skills. Education is often perceived as the means to promoting conventional behavior in the interests of preserving community, rather than as a process of sharing unconventional perceptions and experiences as a means to creating new commonalties out of diversities. Both perceptions focus upon community, but the consequences are quite different; imprisoning and liberating. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
