Early scientists were in dialogue to share their
curiosity and wonder about their personal experiences.
They shared hypotheses and creative speculations about new
ways of perceiving and creating reality. In their journal
communications they challenged traditional paradigms and
initiated revolutions in epistemology, methodology,
theology, and politics. Now that they have become
powerful, the scientists have become authoritative. Simple
sharing of curiosity, wonder, personal experiences,
hypotheses, and creative speculations which might
challenge traditional ways are not permitted in their
professional journals. Only definitive findings about
which doubt has been removed are welcome in the
authoritative journals.
One way of inhibiting challenges to the traditional
scientists' paradigms is to require that all articles
submitted for publication in an authoritative journal be
written in conformity with the traditional paradigms'
standards regarding proof, evidence, analysis, language,
style, and tone. It is impossible to challenge a
traditional paradigm while showing respect for its most
basic assumptions in the expression of the challenge. If
scientists block the publication of challenges to their
authoritative paradigms in their authoritative journals,
then the revolutionary scientists will be forced to make
their challenges in the political arena where the
scientists present their requests for tax support to the
state and federal legislative committees concerned with
the health of science and engineering programs. A very
large fraction of the cost of publishing authoritative
scientists' journals is born by the taxpayers via research
grants which include provision for paying page charges
when research findings are published.
Legislators should ask themselves if it is in the
public interest to pay support for scientists' journals
who censor their journals to inhibit the publication of
challenges to paradigms which inhibit human dialogue.
Taxpayers should not be supporting scientists who are
blocking dialogue in order to protect their traditional
paradigms from challenge in their authoritative journals.
