Dialogue is often blocked by violence: physical, economic, political, religious, educational, medical, psychological, etc. Such violence tends to inhibit dialogue between the victims and the violent ones. Often the explicit purpose of the violence is to occasion alienation, the condition of sin, as in the case of religious groups that excommunicate, shun, ostracize, ignore, and in other ways cut off from fellowship those members of their group who do not conform perfectly enough. Their violence is not made less sinful because it is motivated by a sincere effort to eliminate sin. The misguided efforts tend to inhibit dialogue, occasion sin. The above behaviors which occasion sin are relatively obvious compared to other ways in which dialogue is thrown out of balance, and so sin occasioned. In a broad sense sin is the condition of being in unbalanced dialogue; not being in dialogue is just one way of being in unbalanced dialogue. The person who through alienation comes to be in dialogue only in perverted ways, with perverted people, or with perverted language---is in a state of sin, of alienation. the person may have made free choices all the way into the condition of sin, and felt that choice each was wise and proper; and still end up sinful. There may have been no obvious violence; though there may have been seduction, bribery, and dishonesty. Any process which leads people to experience unbalance with respect to mode, content, language, focus, context, listening, broadcasting, and other aspects of dialogue is a sinful process. Many processes of specialization are sinful because they throw people into unbalanced life-styles which involve serious imbalance regarding dialogue. Usually such specialists can be manipulated by promoting guilt and taking advantage of guilt feelings. Unbalanced persons tend to lack the maturity needed to cope with manipulators. In their specialized contexts they are not likely to be guaranteed freedom from guilt as a right, and guilt is not likely to be regarded as a disease. Rather it is likely to be regarded as a stigma marking those who should be further punished, alienated, cast out, made to be sinners. They are likely to be cut off from dialogue. All persons involved tend to become alienated. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
