They would like to know what they must do to please their teachers. Some of their teachers wisely refuse to play their students' game of dependency and do not tell their students what must be done to please them. The teachers want their students to develop self-motivation, rather than dependency. Some of their students may resent the teachers' refusal to play the game of dependency and conformal affirmation. They may take out their resentment and frustration in low evaluations of the wise teachers, and reward the teachers who willingly play the game of dependency. Such students help administrators keep the less creative teachers who do not give administrators a hard time. Thus students and administrators conspire thoughtlessly to undermine the creative process of education. They work together to reward teachers who use little imagination to fulfill formal expectations. Some teachers are trying to please their students. Such teachers tend to confirm their students' provincialisms, biases, collusions, taboos, and ignorance. Such teachers are fearful and do not dare to challenge their students in any fundamental way which might cause their students to turn upon them in anger or frustration. Such teachers are likely to focus upon the development of technologies as if they were value neutral---for doing so will avoid the challenges involved in dealing with provincialism, biases, collusions, taboos, ignorance, and double blinds. They smother their students in the security which comes from ignoring conflict and pretending it is not real. In appreciation the students reward their protective teachers with words of praise and honor. Such students are not likely to wake up, and so are likely to be appreciative for the rest of their lives. Relatively few of those who do wake up are likely to do so in a creative way which will move to reform the educational context which put them to sleep. Many of those who do not wake up cycle back into the educational context and accentuate those aspects of it which puts them to sleep. Liberal arts college in which these processes occur --- in very profound ways let their students down. They fail to be faithful to their promise of liberation to their students. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
