Concern for the content of science is often divorced from concerns about pedagogy. Scientists often look with disdain upon persons in teacher education departments---because they have divorced pedagogy from concern for the content of science; i.e., persons in teacher education departments are not qualified scientists and presume to teach science. Persons in teacher education departments look with disdain upon persons in science departments because they have divorced science for pedagogy. Persons in science departments are not qualified in the humane art of helping students to learn. Both scientists and persons in teacher education departments have contributed to the alienation of affection which has occasioned the divorce between concern for science content and the concern for helping students to learn in ways which do not their integrity. Exclusive self-righteousness does not reconcile the division of partners. Effective restoration of balance begins at home. Scientists need to be more concerned with finding ways to help students learn. People in teacher education departments need to become more concerned with content of science disciplines. Balance is not restored by achieving greater purity of concern. Demeaning complementary values because they have been carried to exclusive extremes does not inhibit going to such extremes. Arrogance about the purity of one's concerns breeds complementary arrogance and purity of exclusive concerns---and tends to throw everybody farther off balance.
