Normal behavior conforms to expectations, and so does not elicit any desire for an explanation. There is nothing particularly unique or different about normal behavior. It is normal for moving objects to come to rest, so stopping is commonly regarded as normal behavior. Most people do not seek an explanation for why objects which are in motion stop. It is abnormal for a moving object to continue in motion, and so people are more likely to ask why such an object continues in motion. Aristotle so regarded motion and was accepted as an authority for about one thousand years of unimaginative thoughtless recitation of his circular explanations for continued motion. Understanding depends upon asking helpful new questions, upon identifying normal behavior. Understanding of the mechanics of physical objects did not develop until scientists recognized that constant velocity was normal, and changing velocity required explanation. Newton's Laws of Motion explain what Aristotle regarded as normal behavior. Perhaps human understanding of human dynamics will not develop until we change our assumptions regarding what is normal human behavior, and what human behavior requires explanation. Which of the following do not require explanation: generosity, curiosity, affection, aggression, happiness, selfishness, listening, withdrawal, genius, creativity, cooperation, competition, love, hate, alienation, excommunication, conscience, taboo, fear, courage, arrogance, pride, etc. We set the stage for explanation by what we choose as normal behavior. If we make inappropriate choices and seek explanations for what will turn out to be normal behavior, then we will be unlikely to find helpful explanations. Our search for explanations may in fact generate perverted behavior to the point that normal behavior will appear to be perverted---and require explanations of the kinds we have invented. Then healthy people will appear to be sick, and political power will be given to the sick people who appear to be healthy. Abnormal scientists will try to explain the abnormal protestations of the healthy people, and generate perversions through their efforts. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
