We may affirm people without liking or approving their behavior. To affirm a person is to accept their reality at a profound level, to respect their reality. To-love and to-affirm have much in common if both are understood in non-manipulative ways which relate to open communication. Both involve positive action. Toleration may be passive. Affirmation may be and often is a non-cognitive act. Affirmations may be entirely non-verbal. To affirm a person is not the same as agreeing with the person, or supporting what the person supports. To affirm a person is to acknowledge being in a common condition of being human with the person. The essence of a personal affirmation can not be captured in words and manipulated with logical clarity and precision. The essence of personal affirmations are known subjectively by subjects, not objectively by objective analysts. Affirmations are not propositions, declarations, pronouncements, statements of truth, etc. It is not reasonable to disagree with a personal affirmation, any more that it is reasonable to disagree with a personal affirmation any more than it is reasonable to disagree with a smile. To affirm is to be in dialogue in some way which is profound---possibly in disagreement which is profound and mutually respectful. We often affirm people by the manner in which relate to them in disagreement. To coldly ignore a person involves more disaffirmation than to violently and even uncharitably disagree with the person. To maintain dialogue involves affirmation, even if the dialogue is contentious. Love is the power which maintains dialogue in spite of the demands of other values that dialogue be compromised for manipulative purposes. Affirmation confirms the person-hood of the other. Disaffirmation calls into question the person-hood of the other. We relate as equals to those persons whom we affirm. We seek to relate as superiors to those people whom we disaffirm. Arrogance, elitism, excommunication, exclusivity, and the like are inconsistent with the affirmation of persons. To affirm a person is different than to affirm a proposition, truth, belief, truth, fact, etc. While there are significant similarities, there are also important differences due to the differences in the nature of that which is affirmed. To ignore those differences is to disaffirm people. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
