The compulsively pious can not permit others to approach mysteries in analytic I-It modalities, as if essential mysteries were in need of the protection offered by the pious. Technocrats do not admit that there are any essential mysteries. The compulsively pious do not admit that the essential mysteries are more powerful than they are---so they claim the essential mysteries are in need of protection by the pious. Both the technocrats and the compulsively pious deny the transcendent power of the essential mysteries of life, but they differ in the manner of their denial. In fact, many of the compulsively pious people are religious technocrats, and many of the technocrats are compulsively pious worshipers of science and technology. A subculture may be characterized by the mysteries which it accepts, affirms, and enjoys. Some subcultures accept, affirm, and enjoy many mysteries---and differ according to which ones they so treat. Other subcultures accept, affirm, and enjoy virtually no mysteries---and differ according to the manners in which they deny, ignore, repress, fear, obscure, and attempt to gain control over essential mysteries. Yet other cultures mystify realities which are not mysterious in any essential ways, and they differ from each other according to the choices of the realities which are mystified and the manner of mystification. Thus each subculture may be characterized by its response to mysteries. Cultures which differ about mysteries will have difficulties being in dialogue about their ultimate concerns. Mysteries pertain to meaning in life and so to ultimate concerns. Cultures which are characterized by collusive denials of essential mysteries can not be in dialogue with other cultures about the mysteries which they deny. Cultures which mystify realities which are not essentially mysterious can not be in dialogue with cultures which regard such realities as essentially non- mysterious. Often break-downs in dialogue can be traced to differences in the mysteries of different cultures. The technology of each culture is a working out in practice of the implications of the way the culture deals with mystery. The history of science and technology is thus woven into the history of the culture's coping with mystery. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
