Their teachers often confirm their doubts about their ability to learn science. They are taught that science is hard to learn, and they learn that lesson very well---because they are taught that it is an easy lesson to learn. Many students who have had difficulty with science---lack confidence in themselves. Their teachers' lack of confidence in them confirms their self- appraisal and occasions behavior which further proves that both the students and the teachers were right in their appraisals. The strength and frequency of negative technical feed-back originates in part in the non-personal nature of technology. A preoccupation with techniques, especially with objective techniques, does not promote an interest in or skills in relating personally to other people. An objective preoccupation tends to block dispositions towards positive personal feed-back, and leave only critical negative feed-back. Technocrats tend to seek perfection, but humans are eternally imperfect and so subject to constant criticism. The technocrats' perception is of the imperfections, not of the positive attributes. Thus the technocrats feed-back is focused upon the imperfections. Dwelling upon what has been accomplished does not in any objective way promote focusing of attention upon what there is yet to do---and so technocrats do not not tend to dwell upon students' accomplishments. Technocrats are by training disposed to bring attention to students' failures---and so give students negative technical feed-back which undermines the students' confidence, enhances their doubts and fears, blocks honest communication, and makes it difficult for most students to learn science and technical skills. There is no objective technique which can be used to eliminate all negative technical feed-back. It is futile to use technology to try to eliminate the bad effects of technology. There are some dilemmas which do not have technical solutions. The solution to the dilemmas of negative feed back will likely be found in the efforts of people who are not technically oriented or disposed.
