There may be some such patterns which will be internalized during a specific age interval, and which will be difficult (if not impossible) to change later in life. Thus, each person may internalize one of a number of possible value patterns during the ages of five years to eleven years. Once one of the possible value patterns is internalized the person may be virtually unable to change---to become the kind of person they might have been had another value pattern been internalized during that age interval. Even a full intellectual awareness of the advantages of an alternative value pattern---may have little effect upon the personal feelings, affection, relationships, perceptions, decisions, and actions of such a person. The intellectual awareness may have little influence upon the persons values, the internalized patterns which guides them. Values may not flow from intellectual awareness. They may flow instead from patterns internalized in specific age intervals of infancy, childhood, and adolescence. It may be nearly impossible to influence people's values once they are older than their age of the end of their adolescence--- even though it is possible to influence their intellectual, cognitive, rational, and logical behavior. People who intellectually find themselves trapped in value patterns which they recognize to be counter- productive---may be unable to learn in their adult years to embody an alternative set of value patterns which they intellectually recognize to be more in the public interest. They will be unable to personally test out the alternative set of value patterns and make a personal judgment about them. They may be able, however, to behave in ways which make it possible for the next generation to embody the alternative value patterns. That leaves us with the problem of who can be in a position of making comparisons between alternative value patterns. By what values can judgment be made to decide which set of value patterns are most in accord with the Law of Love? Which patterns will maximize mutual awareness, mutual understanding, listening, and dialogue? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
