Facial expressions merely confirms what the body language says to the sensitive person who can not see the facial expressions. The eyes say amen to those who have eyes to see. The students tend not to make any demands upon the lecturer, for they have given up nurturing their curiosity, interest, hunger for understanding, and hope for enlightenment. They have received the message that the lecturer is not really interested in them and their needs for affirmation, encouragement, sympathy, personal understanding, and affection. Despite formal invitations for questions they sense the futility of trying to draw water from a dry well, and are not inclined to make fools of themselves in front of each other. Few students are able to accept the fact that they are playing the role of passive unquestioning zombies, any more than the lecturer is able to accept the fact that he is playing the role of a broadcaster of information which is insensitive to responses from the targets. Thus students and lecturer join in collusions which cast the drama in a far more positive light. The lecturer is delivering high level lectures and the students are rising to the challenge to make sense of them. The ability to understand such high level lectures is a sign of great intelligence, so all students pretend to understand, and convince themselves that they understand so as to be able to convince others. The lecturer takes for granted that the absence of questions which reveal ignorance is a sign that the students understand deeply enough to warrant forging ahead at full speed. Out of respect for the lecturer, perhaps a Nobel Prize Winner, the students decline to take leadership in exposing their collusion; for the first step in such leadership is to admit not having enough intelligence to understand the highly respected lecturer. Such admissions are unthinkable in class in front of all the participants in the wonderful intellectual collusions. Students caught in such a situation need to confess to each other in private one-on-one conversations how they feel about their class, lecturer, and course work. They are likely to find that they have a great deal in common, and have a basis for working together to make their class one which is worthy of respect. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
