The primary word "I-It" is spoken with less than the whole being. When another speaks the primary word "I-Thou" in relationship, our whole being is affirmed. Such a total affirmation may threaten us deeply if we ourselves are not whole, for it resurrects from the deep recesses of our repressions our essential intuitions, perceptions, desires, insights, memories, etc. which we have repressed in fear. Since we repressed them in fear, fear is occasioned by any threat to bring them out of repression. An "I-Thou" relationship affirms our whole self, including what we have repressed because we have feared it. Through fear we have fragmented our self into parts which we regard as "its", and so have repress them. Love (through I-Thou affirmations)seeks to reunite us into one whole---including bringing back those feared essential intuitions, perceptional desires, insights, memories, etc. Thus love threatens our I-It technologies of coping with our fragmented self. Love threatens our I-It way of life, not merely specific contents, possessions, its. Love threatens the presumptions of the "I" of the primary word "I-It" which we speak in our I-It way of life. Love threatens the central "I" of our I-It way of life. Our I- It super-ego perceives the rising up of the id from the depths to remove It from Its throne---and the ego is caught in the conflict initiated by the promptings of Love through I-Thou whole affirmations---which include affirmations of repressed essential intuitions, perceptions, desires, insights, memories, etc. Love's promptings can strike terror in our hearts, and occasion logical, intellectual "reasonable" behaviors to protect the values which occasioned our repressions our alienation from our primal selves. Only through the transformation of our super-ego and the resurrection of our primal selves can we enjoy the pleasures of our potential meanings in humane contexts. Meaning comes through integrative contexts, not through analysis. Our meanings, as the meanings of the symbols we use, are found in contexts; not in being taken apart. The fearful I of our I-It way of life focuses upon analysis, rejection and repression, of substandard parts---and so occasions fear of affirmations of repressed parts which are essential to our being whole in I-Thou contexts.
