By its nature it might turn efforts to overcome evil into efforts which would promote evil. Such a reality might deserve being regarded as the taproot of evil. By undermining all forms of cooperative behavior the taproot of evil would promote disagreement, misunderstanding, conflict, isolationism, excommunication, alienation, etc. In these ways it would promote evil. Since cooperative behavior is facilitated greatly by communication we might expect the taproot of evil to function in ways which would confuse, undermine, block, mis-translate, misinterpret, and in other ways prevent people from becoming familiar with each other and each other's perceptions, feelings, insights, understandings, opinions, etc. By preventing listening, dialogue, and all forms of communication the taproot of evil would undermine all forms of cooperation and promote evil. It is thus likely to function to frustrate the functioning of all forms of languages, both formal and informal. The taproot of evil would also probably function in ways which would undermine the satisfaction of behaving in ways which would transcend evil. It might make meaningful accomplishments appear meaningless, of no consequences, not meriting respect and affirmation. In this way it might promote behavior which is not meaningful---because there would be little difference between meaningful and meaningless behavior if there is no difference in satisfaction which flows from differing behavior. If it is deeply rooted the taproot of evil would likely have its origins deep in our heredity, in instincts which are not readily transcended through learning. This makes it devilishly difficult to sort out the difference between instincts which we should trust because they served as the basis for our survival, and the instincts which might pertain to the taproot of evil. Most religions perceive love to be the only power which can overcome evil. Perhaps evil is that which undermines love, inhibits love, blocks expressions of love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
