Objective analysis can only lead to objective knowledge which confirms the chosen state of alienation (between the analysis and the object of analysis) as the basis for the analysis. Understanding other people, personal relationships, social structures, and other personal realities is a kind of understanding in which the person with understanding is a participant in that which is understood. We can not cease to be participants in other people's lives, personal relationships, social structures, and other personal realities. We deceive ourselves if we think that we can cease to be participants. So called objective analysis of personal realities are indicative of collusions by which participants in the personal realities deceive themselves into thinking that they are not participants. They presume to carry out an objective analysis, when the nature of the situation makes objective analysis impossible. Difficulties which we have with personal realities might be reduced by giving up the notion that objective analysis is the only legitimate way of knowing, and accept the possibility of legitimate non-objective analysis; i.e., non-objective understanding. Analysis may not be the right word, for the approach may need to be holistic, rather than analytic. Yet there may be ways in which participant observers in personal realities may understand the ways in which participants relate to each other and be able of offer insights which transcend the particularities of a given situation or given relationships. Such insights need not be objective to be meaningful in terms of giving meaning to life. We need to learn how to respect non-objective ways of coping with integrity. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
