We naturally respond to them in different ways, in keeping with their different natures. We often respond in a confused manner, responding to a reality of one kind in a way which is appropriate to a reality of a different kind. Inappropriate responses may violate the reality and our integrity. It is important to distinguish between different kinds of realities and between the responses which are appropriate to each kind of reality. Responses may tend towards BEING or towards DOING; PRESENCE or ACTION. We may regard our responses as BEING/DOING: to, with, for, because of, or in spite of the reality. We may enter into a relationship characterized by the united relational words: THOU-THOU, IT-THOU, or IT- IT in which either or both words in a pair may be "I". Our nature and the nature of the realities with which we relate will depend upon the manner in which we choose to enter into relationships. The realities which we---come to know---do not have natures for us which exist independently of how we decide to relate to them. The nature of reality which we do come to know is in part determined by the way in which we choose to approach the various realities of which we become aware. The nature of our response to them is important to what we come to know about their independent reality. Knowledge is knowledge on the part of a participant. There are relative degrees of objectivity and independence of reality---and we need to become aware of the significant differences which those degrees of objectivity and independence make in our lives. Through communal responses to realities we may confirm tentative notions about their nature---and acquire the appearance of certainty which seems to go beyond the level of certainty which is humane. In the extreme we may join together in collusive games of mutual self deception ---wherein we live in a world of objective forms which are independent of our apprehension of them. In such a world our responding will move towards meaningless objective interactions on an impersonal level. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
