A desire is not maintained through undisciplined letting-go to its motivation---without prudence. Satiation will eliminate the desire and make it's "fulfillment" less meaningful---than will prudent nourishment of the desire in a disciplined way. Failure to affirm the desire when prudence indicated that letting-go to it's motivation is unwise---will also kill the desire through the elimination of hope, the denial of it's legitimacy, it's repression, etc. Desires cannot grow in the absence of hope, respect for their legitimacy, or the freedom to be open about them. Violence is done to our desires when those closest to us are unaware of them, unable to acknowledge them, and/or unable to nourish them. In the absence of friendly nourishment of our desires---we inevitably have problems with their legitimacy. We may be torn between imprudent assertions of our desires on the one hand; and joining collusions which ignore, taboo, repress, and in other ways do violence to our desires. There are some desires which need to be nourished by those closest to us---without the need for us to ask for nourishment. If we must ask for nourishment of our desires; even if it is granted, it will have lost it's meaning because we had to ask for it. This makes it essential that we be sensitive to each other's desires and become aware of them apart from a formal assertion. Insensitivity to each other's needs and desires can thus contribute to their starvation and death. When our desires are not nourished we die as unique individuals---even though we may continue to function as automata in accordance with cultural patterns of behavior. Automata are not creative or loving---they cannot cope spontaneously with novel situations. Automata have low survival potential in revolutionary situations, whether they be made of electronic or organic components. Thus our corporate survival depends upon our mutual nourishment of our unique individual desires; rather than upon our regulation of them to make them conform to some theoretical ideal.
