They feel it is irresponsible to condone immoral behavior. Other people's behavior is in some sense their responsibility; they feel a sense of responsibility for how other people act. They, of course, are not informed about the behavior of all people---so their sense of responsibility extends only to those about whom they are informed. If they are diligent, they will seek to become informed about the behavior of many people---and extend their sense of responsibility to all those about whom they become informed. There are people who feel a deep sense of responsibility to inform such keepers-of- morality about the behavior of renown non-conformists, thus extending the range of responsibility of the keepers- of-morality. Some administrators have significant power over their subordinates; e.g.; the power to raise or not raise wages, to promote, to fire, to reprimand, to leave in doubt. Such administrators may also be self-appointed keepers-of- morality. Some of their subordinates may be helpers of keepers-of-morality---feeling a sense of responsibility to bring to the attention of the administrator the non-conformist behavior of some of the subordinates of the administrator. Usually the duty to report such behavior is carefully selected with consideration to the nature of the relationship between the helper and the non-conformist. The administrator is unlikely to get uniform reporting on the non-conformist-behavior of the subordinates. Nevertheless, the keeper-of-morality administrator will be loath to condone immorality; and is likely to treat the subordinate who has stepped out of line with less favor than the one who conforms to traditional behavior patterns. In fact, many of the people upon whom the administrator depends for support---will expect that administrator to condemn any immorality which is brought to the attention of the administrator. Not to condemn may be considered to condone---and it would be immoral not to condemn immorality! Thus, the critical question is what non-conventional behavior is brought to the attention of the administrator who acts as a keeper-of- morality. Institutions which are caught in a trap such as is indicated above will need to examine the range of their responsibilities, and the gracious demands of the law of Love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
