Emotions, rather than intellect, guided much of their coping with danger. Emotionally motivated flight and fight was central to survival. Emotionally motivated care for each other insured another generation. Emotional bonding kept tribes together. Book learning, written laws, and abstract reasoning were not central to their survival. The situation is different now. Often we find our emotions to be annoying distractions. Emotions undermine our objectivity and cast doubt upon the reliability of our logical processes. Our emotions often embarrass us and others---confronting us with situations we do not know how to handle. Getting emotional in polite social circles can be damaging to our getting ahead in life. Our emotions sometimes give away important secrets and prevent us from being successful in our important tasks. Rarely are our emotions very productive. They are hard to control: We cannot prevent them from occurring in an untimely way in awkward situations. We cannot will them to occur when we want to have them occur. They are most unmanageable. They often tend to undermine our well planned systems for human progress. It is clear that emotions are not very valuable. They are unnecessary left-overs from an earlier era in the evolution of the human race. Through appropriate technical advances we will find ways to control our emotions---so that they will no longer hinder human progress. Exclusively technical approaches to human situations will not reveal the important aspects of the whole situation. An incomplete analysis will not lead to wise behavior. An understanding which is biased by the use of only one method of analysis---whatever its nature---will not be an understanding which fosters wise behavior. Any approach to problems which ignores the emotional aspect, and/or represses it; will be a biased approach which will occasion rebellion in some form. Emotional rebellions tend to have great power and tend to overwhelm non- emotional coping mechanisms which do not have as ancient roots in human nature. It is foolish for the less well- grounded intellect to presume to cast out the more solidly grounded emotions. The effort will surely lead to failure. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
