They are disturbed by any power which is not under the control of some program which structures behavior. They are troubled by spontaneous behavior which is not occasioned by any program. Thus highly emotional behavior which is very powerful in its impact is very threatening to some people. They would have us develop programs and systems to control all of our emotions, lest they overwhelm us. We may be encouraged to control our emotions when we are very young---by those around us giving us excommunication signals when we become emotional. Rather than be cut off from those upon whom we depend---we learn to control our expressions of our emotions---expressing only conventional emotions according to the program of approved emotional behavior. Our own emotions thus become displaced by a set of conventional emotions. We become emotionally programmed. This takes place in ways which are usually not open to intellectual/verbal analysis. The conventional emotions become so internalized that it becomes difficult for us to recognize the difference between our own genuine spontaneous emotions---and those which are occasioned by some program of conventional behavior. The distinction between internal and external promptings is not a clear one. There is a great deal of ambiguity, and so the issues are not clearly drawn. It is even difficult to show that there exists a program for the control of emotions. We may feel and believe that there is no such program. Insights into our situation may be gained by consideration of instances in which we are emotionally disturbed by expressions of emotions---we feel that the emotions expressed are "inappropriate". We need to give consideration to the question of emotional honesty--- should we be emotionally deceptive and dishonest? Are we to be held responsible for how we cope with others' emotions---responsible for their emotional responses to our behavior? Should we seek to control objectified emotions as elements in casual relationships? To what extent are we to be held responsible for another's emotions? To what extent are others to hold us responsible for our emotions? Shall we ignore how we feel about such issues? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
