Many people place a great deal of emphasis upon statistical analysis of data---as if therein lies the key to new insights and knowledge. Students are trained extensively in statistical analysis so that they can perform experiments in a scientific way---as if statistical analysis were the essence of the scientific way. The latter assumption is often occasioned by the assumption that quantitative measurement and computations were the essence of the scientific way. The valuing of measurement and computations outside the range of their propriety does a great deal of harm. The verification of a hypothesis is often the least difficult step, and a rather straight-forward one, in the formulation of new insights and knowledge. More difficult than verification is the process of the formulation of a creative hypothesis. Often our collusions, illusions, delusions, and confusions stand in the way of formulating a creative hypothesis. Usually it is our traditional values which we are affirming outside the range of their propriety---which block our awareness of appropriate hypotheses. The blockage deprives us of the freedom to question traditional ways of perceiving reality, and so blocks our realization of the nature of reality. What is most difficult is to accept the freedom to see our situations in new ways, rather than to confirm that our perceptions are coherent. The creative persons among us are constantly getting covert signals that their new visions are illusions or delusions, because by collusion we seek to maintain our traditional perceptions---while pretending to be seeking new perceptions. We are rarely free to question our basic assumptions if we are trapped in an emotionally insecure sub-culture. Emotionally insecure people seek to avoid emotionally threatening situations. They form collusions to protect themselves. They abridge people's freedom to question their traditional ideals and values. For this reason, exclusively objectively/analytically oriented people find it difficult to formulate new questions and new hypotheses which transcend the limitations of their sophisticated measurements and statistical analyses.
