The greater the technical competence of a teacher the greater is the intimidation which students are likely to experience due to it---and the less likely it is that the teacher will have the maturity necessary to recognize and deal with that intimidation. Technical competence is often acquired at the expense of affectional/emotional growth. The time spent in acquiring technical competence is not available to be spent in affectional/emotional activities---with the natural consequence that such growth is not nurtured as greatly. Yet, it is the teachers who are most technically competent who most need to be able to deal with intimidation by competence! The student who is intimidated by competence may not be able to develop technical competence under the watchful eye of the technically competent teacher. Such a student may need time to work things out alone, or with students of comparable ability. At the same time there needs to be an opportunity for an appropriate level of technical guidance when occasions require it. The teacher who is not sensitive to intimidation by competence will find it very difficult to offer the most helpful combination of technical and affectional support. There is no systematic way to offer the needed support, yet such a teacher may be unable to cope in an unsystematic way. Intimidation by competence is likely to involve not only technical competence, but also non-verbal messages which put the student on the defensive. The student may fear to take any step out of anticipation that it will not be acceptable to the "authority". A fear of immediate "rejection" by the respected competent one is likely to block risky creativity, imagination, brain-storming, and other "not-sure" steps. The more the technically competent teacher means to the student the more the student is likely to fear to appear unfavorable to the teacher---unless the student is confident of the teacher's unconditional acceptance in their personal relationship. Thus only genuine love can transcend intimidation by competence. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
