Our responsibilities are not mutual; i.e. that person is not responsible for our behavior. Were the responsibilities mutual, the relationships might be mutual, yet manipulative. With mutual responsibility for each other's behavior the desire to manipulate to achieve success would undermine openness and honesty, even though not the mutuality of the manipulative processes. Thus being held responsible for another person's behavior tends to generate perversions in human relationships---with the degree of mutuality of responsibility affecting the nature of the perversions. Parents who are held (or feel) responsible for the behavior of their children tend to try to manipulate their children's behavior. They may differ as to the techniques of manipulation attempted: physical, overt, covert, psychological, punishment, reward, threat, promise, contractual exchange, direct, indirect, verbal, body- language, morality, religion, etc. The child is bound to respond in the use of defensive techniques to avoid the violation of integrity---trying to reciprocally manipulate the parent, often using techniques learned by watching the parent's manipulative behavior. Similar situations exist in relationships between students and teachers, between teachers and administrators, between religious leaders and followers, etc. These considerations suggest the desirability of an examination of the traditions occasioning the holding of people responsible for the behavior of others "in their care". There are costs involved in those traditions, as well as some advantages. The wisdom of the traditions cannot be judged without being aware of the costs as well as the advantages. The costs tend to be occasioned by the break-down in communication between the manipulator and the manipulated. The responsibility to control behavior tends to be regarded as of greater importance than the responsibility to love the person for whom one is responsible; i.e., the responsibility to maintain open channels of communication with that person.
