To the extent that we live in this way we tend to take verbal commitments more seriously than behavioral commitments--- regarding behavioral commitments as not binding unless they are confirmed in words, perhaps in signed legal contracts. When we ignore behavioral commitments in preference for verbal statements of commitment we are denying the saying that actions speak louder than words. It is much easier to be deceptive in verbal communication than it is to be deceptive in intimate personal behavior, especially if the verbal communication is reduced to writing to the exclusion of non-verbal communication through personal presence. Thus institutions of higher education facilitate deception through their almost exclusive emphasis upon verbal communications---especially written verbal communication. In intimate personal behavior there are many channels of communication which are operating simultaneously and in parallel. It is virtually impossible to maintain parallel deceptive communications through many parallel channels of communication. The lack of integrity of communication and perceptive will give away the deception to the more sensitive persons. For this reason administrators who seek to succeed through deception are likely to emphasize the use of written verbal communication, and play down the importance of intimate non-verbal communication. They are threatened by persons who are sensitive to non-verbal revelations of their deceptive intentions---and seek to undermine such sensitivity. The tendency to deprive behavior of meaning apart from interpretive verbal statements---also tends to protect those who would cope through deception. The deprivation practice blocks the perception of the meaning of behavior apart from verbal interpretations---blocking all non-verbal channels of communication and so promoting sin and alienation. The deprivation practice is promoted by implying that a poem, picture, painting, dance, sculpture, movie, symphony, song, play, or other work of art is not understood unless it has been verbally interpreted---preferably by an authoritative expert.
