It therefore comes as a baffling disappointment to discover that love does not necessarily have the power to eliminate injustice, tragedy, and/or suffering---and even more baffling to discover that often love increases our awareness of injustice, tragedy, and suffering through increases sensitivity. It thus appears that love increases injustice, tragedy, and suffering---rather than decreasing them. Love thus appears counter-productive and of doubtful value. To evaluate love in terms of it's usefulness in eliminating injustice, tragedy, and suffering---is to raise justice, the avoidance of tragedy, and the avoidance of suffering to the level of ultimate concerns. Experience indicates, however, that it is counter- productive to: (1) Seek perfect justice, (2) Try to eliminate all tragedy, (3) Eliminate all suffering. Perfect justice is impossible because the best that can be done is to equitable distribute injustice with love. It is impossible to fulfill everybody's expectations---so the failure of fulfillment will occasion the perception of injustice. Attempts to assure the fulfillment of one person's expectations will occasion conflict with attempts to assure the fulfillment of another person's expectations---and such conflict will occasion injustice which will be distributed one way or another. It is impossible to eliminate tragedy because tragedy is of it's essence a consequence of a conflict between ultimate values, a result of people doing their best to be faithful to the best they know. Trying to eliminate tragedy in terms of the best we know will not guarantee a transcendence of tragedy. We fail. The elimination of all suffering would call for the elimination of all sensitivity---and so the generation of the suffering of a meaningless existence. Love cannot eliminate injustice, tragedy, and suffering---it can help people who are suffering injustice and tragedy share their lives together in meaningful ways which bind them together, rather than drive them apart in conflict.
