Eye contact is one of the major forms of non-verbal
communication. The vocabulary of eye contact
communication may vary from culture to culture, but what
is done with the eyes is important in one way or another.
The rhythm of eye contact and the manners of holding and
avoiding eye contact convey messages which may confirm,
supplement, or deny verbal communication. Many of the eye
contact messages occur very rapidly in comparison to
verbal messages, and would require volumes of verbal
messages for a barely adequate translation. The rapidity
of eye messages occasion the possibility of high speed
dialogue which out paces human facilities for conscious
analysis in real time. Such dialogue may involve messages
directly between subconscious levels of awareness, even as
the conscious levels plod along exchanging verbal messages
which are barely in touch with the subjective realities
being shared through eye contact messages.
Efforts to make use of eye contact messages through
conscious manipulation tend to be self frustrating. Eye
contact messages tend to be self revealing, and thus tend
to reveal the intent of manipulation, especially to the
person who is particularly sensitive to eye contact
messages. Conscious manipulation of eye contact messages
is likely to block the passage of authentic messages of
self revelation---and the absence of such authentic
messages of self revelation is itself a revelation of
manipulative intent. Manipulators thus tend to reveal
themselves in spite of their clever designs.
People who fear self revelation often tend towards
avoiding eye contact, for fear of revealing their fear,
and out of fear of intimate encounters with others. By
avoiding eye contact they may be able to more fully
channel all their attention into verbal channels of
communication---and avoid eye contact contradictions of
those verbal communications. In this way they may be
personally absent while intellectually present---
communicating as intellect to intellect, without soul,
personality, or character. Such reasoning is likely to
have little human meaning and is likely to be filed away
for posterity in musty scholarly journals rather than
affect changes in human living.
