Intimidation is a process of promotion of timidity.
The process is not necessarily a conscious or intentional
one. Jill may be timid and be intimidated by Jack who is
self-assured and assertive by nature--without Jack knowing
that he is intimidating Jill, much less intending to
intimidate Jill. Intimidation is thus a relationship
between people, not an act of one person--an act which is
objective. Some objective acts may be consciously
intended to be intimidating--but that does not mean that
such acts are the essence of relationships of
intimidation, or that intimidation as a process promotes
timidity on the part of one of the participants in the
relationship.
Intimidation is likely to occur when individuals who
have power are insensitive to the needs and perceptions of
others who lack power. Intimidation may be
conscious/intentional, or may not be conscious and/or
intentional. Intimidation may pervert positive forms of
modesty, humility, hesitation, difference, submission,
obedience, courtesy and respect---turning them into
demeaning forms of: timidity, bashfulness, self-abasement,
resignation, irresolution, vacillation, indecision,
instability, acquiescence, subjection, passivity,
obsequiousness, and servility. The subtleties of
distinction between the positive virtues. The negative
perversions of them---conceal the tragic process of
perverting the virtues into their dark shadows having the
same broad outlines---although not the substance of the
virtues. Because of such subtleties powerful but
insensitive people may, through their assertiveness and
arrogance, violate the weak and sensitive people---with
the best of the intentions and the least of awareness.
Intimidation may be countered by defending the rights
of all people to be themselves: to choose and be with
such friends as they may desire, to enjoy privacy as a
means to self-definition and formulation of conviction, to
be free of fear of self-revelation; to openly communicate
perceptions, insights, opinions, fantasies, desires, and
conclusions. Intimidation is moderated by the promotion
of the responsibility to accept people for being true to
themselves and others with integrity.
