They are doubly blessed when the relationship is reciprocal through mutual awareness and understanding. The blessings are not POSSESSIONS which are owned, maybe with ownership transferred. The blessings are realized only in mutuality and become as nothing when an effort is made to possess and control. Blessings are imperfect when they involve injustice-- -when one or more people are violated in the affirmed action which brings pleasure, satisfaction, and a sense of personal meaning. Stealing is not a blessing; neither is rape, embezzlement, murder, torture, war, cheating, ridicule, shunning, excommunication, monopolism, slavery, etc.---regardless of how much personal pleasure, satisfaction, and a sense of personal meaning such an activity may bring to any one or more persons. Meaningful blessings do not involve injustice---because the more fully all affected persons affirm the doing, the more meaningful to all is the blessing. Technocrats seek to achieve blessings as if they were goals to be realized through manipulative techniques. The objective procedure in which technocrats tend to specialize---exclude the possibility of all-around subjective justice. Justice defined in exclusively objective terms is injustice which weighs against the possibility of blessed relationships between people. Thus the technocrat's way will not achieve states of blessedness. Real pleasure, satisfaction, and personal meaning are not goals achieved through the use of techniques which are exclusive. POSSESSIVE societies enjoy few blessings because their focus is upon POSSESSIONS---rather than upon the affirmation of meaningful dialogue between people. The competition for POSSESSIONS tends to undermine reciprocity and mutuality. Compulsive competition for POSSESSIONS occasions injustice which undermines blessedness. POSSESSIVE societies tend to be exclusively objective and so unable to enjoy the integrity of I-Thou relationships. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
