We often want to prove that we were right in a position taken, a decision, an action, an attitude, etc. Vindication is often not genuinely helpful, even though it may satisfy a narrow personal desire. Such a desire tends to be a desire for security though to be achievable through vindication. The satisfaction of vindication is felt to hold a promise of security and well-being, even though it is likely to generate alienation on the part of those who lose out in the vindication process. Such alienation generates the opposite of the sought for security. When the search for truth, justice, righteousness, power, piety, fairness, etc. are undergirded by a desire for vindication, the search is likely to be corrupted--- even though apparently successful. The motives tend to create the meaning of the search and its fruits, even though the objective results do not appear to be affected. Vindication is sought for subjective reasons and the consequences of the seeking are fundamentally subjective---although often represented as being objective in nature. Vindication is often an objective attempt to fix a subjective situation. The impropriety of the mode of approach tends to doom the effort from the beginning. The search for understanding and control tend to exacerbate the original subjective situation, rather than to fix it. Skill and sophistication in objective procedure will not transcend the impropriety---even if escalated to the level of nuclear war or psychological war. Vindication is a poor substitute for what love has to offer, but love can not be obtained on our own terms--- while apparently vindication is available on our own terms. Vindication is sought by those who have not known love, confused about the nature of love, or fearful to risk being transformed by love. The objective fruits of vindication may be enjoyed without the poisonous effects of the motives of vindication. The destructive aspects of vindication originate in the subjective motivation, not in the objective goal. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
