The nature of the self defense is dependent upon the perceived nature of the attack, both with respect to mode of attack and severity of attack. The severity of the self defense will be dependent upon the relative value placed upon self and upon others that may be sacrificed in the process of self defense. If self is ultimately valued and others are minimally valued all means may be justified for use in self defense. If self is perceived to exist for the purpose of advancing the welfare of the total human community, then self may be sacrificed for the community. Thus self defense depends upon self conception --- upon how self is viewed. Some view their should as sacred and capable of defilement by others than the self. Those who would defile a sacred self can not themselves be sacred, thus they are expendable in the process of defending the sacred self. Such a self-conception clearly will occasion conflict, violence and sin. Some people view specific places and rituals as sacred and capable of defilement by those who do not hold them sacred. Such places and rituals must then be protected by those who value them. Those who would defile such places and rituals can not themselves be holy, and so they may be sacrificed in the process of defending that which is holy. Such perspectives occasion holy wars in which humans defend the gods against defilement by humans who are not in tune with the gods. Such perspectives are usually associated with the notion that some people are evil, and some people are good. There is a battle between the forces of good and evil---with both sides believing they are the good forces and their opponents are the evil forces. In most such conflicts both sides usually contribute about equally to the breakdown in communication between people and so are equally sinful. Neither side is able to pass fair judgement upon their cultural values in terms of the price paid for them in alienation. Self defense presumes that values originate in the self, reside in the self, depend upon the self---rather than that, values create, sustain, and protect the self. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
