For this reason the opening of channels of communication may be a threatening experience --- confusion, anxiety, and fear being generated by the perceptual overload. This may occur upon regaining sight or hearing. It may also occur when a person is subjected to a massive dose of tactile sensations which have for a long time been withheld; e.g., jumping into cold water or experiencing a lot of physical affection. People who have become alienated from others may experience a perceptual overload during the process of reconciliation. For this reason reconciliation may be experienced as a threatening experience --- confusion, anxiety., and fear being generated by needing to cope with unfamiliar human relationships. Thus attempts at abrupt reconciliation are likely to be counter productive ---fear causing retreat back into alienation. Learning how to integrate perceptions into one's self is a gradual process. This is true regardless of the nature of the perceptions. The learning takes place most quickly when the stages of learning build upon each other in some natural sequence. To attempt to deal with learning units out of natural sequence is likely to generate frustration, fear, anxiety, etc. Thus it is important to identify any significant natural sequences in maturation processes. These may differ according to variations in the beginning situations of the student. Each of us begins with where we are because of our past learning experiences. In some instances we may need to "unlearn" lessons which were occasioned by attempts to adapt to perverse situations. With the passing of the perverse situations we may have to go through developmental stages which are different than those appropriate to persons who did not have to try to cope with perverse situations. Teachers who are helpful will be sensitive to students' needs and not put them in situations which generate perceptual overloads. Mutual dedications to openness and honesty will facilitate such consideration. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
