There is not enough time and energy to satisfy all normal desires. This is not grounds for denying the reality of the desires, or for not sharing the awareness of the desires. There is satisfaction in sharing with others the awareness of your desires, even when time and energy does not permit the desire to be satisfied. A dedication to openness leads to an openness and honesty about desires, even when it is not practical to fulfill the desire through decisions and actions motivated by the shared desires. The sharing of desires can be meaningful apart from the fulfillment of them. Through the sharing, self and other come to know each other more fully. Should the impracticality of fulfilling the desires lead to the repression of the desires? Then self loses touch not only with self, but loses touch with others also. Thus alienation is often born. It is difficult to distinguish between the expression of the awareness of a desire, and the expression of an intent to fulfill the desire. This is true both in the articulation of the awareness/intent and in the perception of other's articulation. In a conformist society the expression of an intent to fulfill a tabooed desire is likely to be treated with a severity much like that accorded the fulfillment of the desire. Because of the difficulty in distinguishing between the expression of the awareness of a desire, and the expression of an intent to fulfill a desire, the conformist society will thus tend to treat the expression of an awareness of a desire with the severity much like that accorded the fulfillment of the desire. Thus, members of a conformist society must take steps to avoid revealing to any potential judge any desire which the society has tabooed. Each member of a conformist society tends towards internalization of the taboos, and so each member is a potential judge. Each member of a conformist society must repress awareness of tabooed desires, lest their conscience pass judgement upon them and they find themselves unacceptable. Conformists cannot be honest with themselves about their own desires, much less be honest with each other. Thus sin abounds in a conformist society---and so also the fruits of sin; violence, misunderstanding, tension, etc. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
