Educing is a drawing-out process which of its nature involves the revelation of the learner's perceptions and feelings---whether they be correct/conventional or incorrect/unconventional. If the student fears to reveal self to the educator, then dialogue and learning are inhibited. If the educator fears to reveal self to the student, real dialogue is impossible; the student is likely to perceive the educator as a manipulator, and the student will fear to reveal self to the educator. In either case, roles are likely to become formalized and fixed, rather than mutual and exchangeable. Education cannot take place without mutual self-revelation on the part of students and educators. Without self-revelation the educator cannot know of and correct "false" notions of the student, and the student cannot know of and role-model wise behavior of the educator---regarding ambiguity, doubt, fear, anxiety, etc. If self-revelation is inhibited on the part of either, student and educator cease to be in dialogue, and their relationships degenerate into role playing, as pupil and trainer. In such instances dialogue regarding personal values, attitudes, emotions, and perceptions become restrained if not totally eliminated. As a result the educator seeks ways of promoting conformity to the educator's personal values, attitudes, emotions, and perceptions. When the student's desires and needs are not respected, the result is intellectual rape. The nature of the violence is not any less real because of good intentions and sincerity on the part of the educator. Even when there is consent on the part of the student, and an uncritical embracing of the trainer's personal values, attitudes, emotions, and perceptions---the relationship is more akin to seduction than to genuine love. Intellectual seduction does not lead to liberation. Because education cannot take place without self- revelation, it is essential that educators create contexts in which there is security for students who seek to reveal themselves. In the absence of such security there cannot be truly liberating education. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
