What we have been taught to want is often more of an obligation than a personal desire. We "desire" what we should, out of a sense of duty, because it is expected of us. When this is the case it is hard to discover what our real self really desires. Introjected desires masquerade as our own desires, and our identity is confused. Introjected obligations may mirror the conflicts of their origins. Our real personal desires originate in our whole being, and do not conflict with each other psychologically---even though it may not be possible for practical reasons to fulfill all our genuine desires. Yet the tension between them is not so much internal, as it is external. It is internal tensions which destroy a person, not external tensions. Thus internal tensions between introjected conflicting obligations can destroy a person's integrity, and so occasion their death. In a society dominated by duties and obligations it is hard to avoid the internalization of conflicting duties and obligations. A way needs to be found to transcend expectations as the basic structuring factor in society, especially expectations which are coercive in nature, and which occasion alienation upon failure to fulfill them.
