Separating human relationships into sexual and non-sexual relationships violates human integrity. People are sexual creatures. Sexuality is part of their whole being. I-Thou relationships involve the whole being. I-It relationships do not involve the whole being. Isolating sexuality thus promotes I-It relationships. When rules are imposed regarding occasions when sexuality is (or is not) permitted, those rules violate human integrity and promote I-It relationships. People fear to approach each other as whole persons, because whole persons include sexuality. Sexuality is permitted only in specified situations---at least according to the logic of the rules. The promotion of I-It relationships makes even such "permitted" intimacy all but impossible, because the reality of I-Thou relations becomes unknown. The rules governing sexuality inhibit openness due to fear that sexual relationships may be initiated and punishment ensue. To avoid such risks, people are approached objectively, rather than personally as whole sexual creatures. Thus I-It relationships come to dominate all human intercourse, and so engender frustration which is expressed in violence, including sexual violence. Those who have accepted the isolation of sexuality perceive reality in the objective mode. For them, sexual relationships might undermine their view of the ultimate nature of reality. They might be flooded with a realization of the potential I-Thou relationships which they have been avoiding out of fear. Such a flood of unfamiliar sensual data would not compute under their traditional theoretical structure. It would radically challenge the presumed comprehensive character of that theoretical structure, and also engender questions about its value. The fear of these challenges prompts reluctance to become involved with others as whole persons. Thus rules are used to keep people at safe distances in physical, psychological, emotional, fantasy, spiritual, and other modes of relationship---in addition to the mode to be regulated; the sexual one.
