What is obvious to one person is not in a like way obvious to another person. What is obvious is so obvious that it is impossible to perceive/feel otherwise. Two people may be unable to communicate and/or cooperate because of incompatible "obvious" perceptions/feelings. Each takes for granted that the other shares their own "obvious" perceptions/feelings. They cannot conceive of the possibility that another person might perceive/feel differently, and so it is impossible for them to discuss or disagree about their real differences. They cannot know that they have basic differences because they have differences regarding what is obvious. Basic differences regarding what is obvious are often never identified because people with such basic differences often protect themselves against frustration by adopting the attitude that "they" are not worth being concerned about, or bothered by. People with differences in what they perceive as obvious" will often define each other out of their "in group". Then it is not important to them that the "others" behave so strangely and have little respect for the perceptions/feelings of members of the "in group". There is no need to clarify the differences in what each group perceives/feels as obviously "right". Clarification of differences in what is obvious will come only after members of "in groups" conclude that it is important form them to get to know members of other "in groups" which are not traditionally of concern to self's own "in group". When blockages to communication come to be regarded as evil, then the fight against evil will lead to greater understanding via more meaningful communication. So long as conformity is regarded as good and non-conformity is regarded as evil, so long will blockages to communication persist---including differences in what is obvious. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
