Some gain pleasure from denying that they seek pleasure. Others gain pleasure by openly seeking pleasure. Some seek pleasure through rational processes. Others gain pleasure in personal relationships. Some seek to maximize pleasure through deferral of gratification. Others experience real pleasure now. All decisions and actions may ultimately be perceived as efforts to be pleased by what is decided and done. Many decisions and actions are justified in terms of criteria which are not openly related to the desire for pleasure. Such criteria are often regarded as absolute, beyond evaluation in terms of their relevance to meeting human needs. Some people seek truth for its own sake. They feel that all truth is equally valuable, yielding equal amounts of pleasure. If all truth is equally valuable, how is one to decide which truths to seek? May we decide that some truths are more worthy of being sought than others? In terms of what criteria are we to decide which truths to seek, and which to ignore or neglect? Is there some transcendent truth which tells us which truths are most to be desired? Why should we desire some truths more than other truths? Who should have a vote? Should those who already know the most---be the ones who have a vote? Should those who will most enjoy the search---have the right to vote? Should those who will most benefit from the fruits of the search and/or the search itself---be the ones granted the right to vote? Who should be pleased by the search for the truth? Whom should truth, and the search for truth serve? Is the search for truth above democratic principles? Is the search for truth essentially an elitist enterprise, open only to an aristocracy? Does the search exist and should it be supported by the common people---in order to give pleasure to the aristocracy? If that is not its purpose, what is? How is the purpose of the search for truth related to the fulfillment of that purpose? Does the search fulfill its own purpose? Who cares? Who can tell? (c) 2005 by Paul A.
