Extreme exclusive dedications to conflicting good purposes produces extreme tragedies. The greater the dedications---the greater the conflict and the violations which go with them. Improvements in technology will not resolve such conflicts. Technocrats cannot help eliminate tragedy through improvements in technology, nor through increased supplies of material goods and services. Tragedy continues until the conflict between good purposes are is recognized and transcended. Efforts to resolve the conflicts in favor of one of the good exclusive purposes will not help. Technocrats are likely to offer assistance in such futile efforts, and so intensify the tragedy. Superior techniques and power will not touch the opposing good purpose which is a subjective reality, rather than an objective reality. Technocrats cannot manipulate subjective realities, and so cannot deal creatively with tragedy. Some would eliminate tragedy. They do not fathom the depths of tragedy. They cannot help people respond humanely to tragedy. Manipulative responses to tragedy are not humane. They do not help. Some tragedies may be avoided by promoting real integrity---by transcending and resolving conflicts between relative good purposes. To the extent that human values, purposes, goals, desires, etc., have integrity---there is less likelihood of conflicting good purposes and so less likelihood of tragic consequences of such conflicts. Some people mistake misfortune for tragedy. They do not fathom the reality of tragedy. Some misfortunes can be avoided through systematic efforts. Yet full control of human life can not eliminate all misfortunes, but such full controls would result in the tragedy of lost meaning. Some people regard tragedy as punishment by a superior power. They do not know transcendent Love. They experience the tragedies associated with the conflict between legalism and Love. They need to learn how Love can express its power with justice in a way which is true to Love. (c) 2005 by Paul A.
